[on design and loss]

I like my trees to look as natural as possible.

Often nature's most stunning and beautiful effects
are reduced and molded a child breaks a stick

From mud comes sculpted mud leaning into the wind
growing in confined spaces on the edge of a basketball court

mid july passes for may undisturbed, a nickel bag nestled in a condom
There are no thoughts drawing under a shade tree regarding a woman

Commodore Perry in command over his blacktop
his trash bags, drugs, and tires never wavering

[ intention / attention ]

There is no right way to measure beauty

While reading

There would be no pepper for Budapest, pesto in Bogota, no rutabagas in baggage. There are no words for rage, color for clear, seeds in bananas, and no sound in sleep. Consumed, I began cleaning; as a portrait of moments flicking out a drifting life, a lake, an edited reality skidding time upon our time until everything was cool, brilliant and bold; forms would curve careers as coffee urns flooding over with flavored antacids. While reading, there would be moments for a soundtrack and applause. There would be money hiding in roadway rest stops in those nothing corners wearing wool disillusionment socks keeping warm.

Poetryetc is a listserv relating to poetry and poetics which provides a forum for poets to debate their critical and creative work. The list has over the years run a number of projects for its members, of which Snapshots has been the most enduring.

Every Wednesday, Poetryetc members were invited to post short poems on any subject or in any form they chose. The idea was to make a poetic collage of instamatic “snaps” of that day that reflected the international membership of the list. The project has generated an astounding number of poems.

The first two runs, of six weeks each, and the first ten weeks of the third run, are archived at Wild Honey Press under Poetryetc Project. The rest - amounting in all to a run of a year - are archived here.

Poetryetc, like its affiliate Salt Publishing (, was founded by Australian poet John Kinsella. Salt is managed by Christopher Hamilton-Emery (, while Poetryetc is owned by Alison Croggon ( Poetryetc is now archived at and anyone interested can join from that url.
