The Light of Evening
Back home in our childhood,
at the peak of summer
when the empty garden recovers
its afternoon silence,
the light of evening,
over the rusty gate,
flowers among the aspens:
a clarity like that of ripe peaches
hanging high in the branches
among the vine-poles of the vineyard,
on the dark, steep slopes
of the Scharrach hills
aflame.
